Course Limited to 6 Participants

Over the course of two-weeks participants in this class will experience the unique medium of “painting” with pastels. Our focus will emphasize the balance between material, light, and subject.
Participants will learn about different types of pastels, blending techniques and surfaces, as well as how to mix colors and create various effects. NO prior pastel or drawing experience is necessary!
During this two-week intensive class, students will leave with a pastel painting suitable for framing. Our subject matter will be a respectful still life featuring ancient Puebloan pottery from the Verde Valley Archaeology Center and Museum’s repository.
The instructor for the class is Sylvia Strobel. Sylvia is a 30-year veteran Biology and Chemistry teacher retiring from The Orme School in May of 2025 when the historic ranch school closed. She spent 10 years teaching Biology and Chemistry at Orme, and her last two years of teaching at Orme she taught oil painting and pastels. Much of her recent work showcases the beautiful landscape, historic buildings, and ancient Puebloan pottery found at Orme. She is a regular visitor to Zuni Pueblo, and Mesa Verde in Cortez, Colorado, areas rich in Puebloan history.
Sylvia's work has been accepted at juried shows at Yavapai College and she regularly shows her art in Cortez, Colorado. She is a founding member of The Artist Guild of Camp Verde and has lived in the Verde Valley for 25 years.
The class fee includes all materials needed. Participants will leave with their own set of pastels. If you have questions, please email Sylvia at sstrobel585@gmail.com
