The Robert and Estelle Jonas Library

One purpose of a museum library is to provide documentation on the objects within the museum. The museum library is seen as a tool to provide support to the museum staff as well as researchers and scholars. In our case, some library books have been moved into the Repository space for easy reference by the repository staff.

The VVAC Library is a member of the Yavapai Library Network (YLN). The YLN is a consortium that provides a multitude of services to its member libraries and their patrons. Our collection is part of a shared catalog that all member libraries and patrons can use to access over a million items, even in the smallest and most remote libraries. YLN members include 23 public libraries, four college libraries, and three “special collections” libraries. The VVAC Library is classified as a “Special Collection Library” along with Sharlot Hall Museum (Prescott) and the Yavapai Law Library (Prescott). One of the main distinction of the special collection libraries is that the holdings are not loaned out through the network. The public can view the special collection holdings but need to contact that library directly for access.

The focus of the Jonas VVAC Library is Anthropology and Native American history. The VVAC Library currently has 3,376 items catalogued within the YLN system. All items have been donated. The largest donor has been the Jonas’ of several hundred books. The Library recently received 230 unique books from the estate of Dr. Theodore "Ted" Robert Frisbie, of Edwardsville, IL. He obtained his B.A. and M.A. in Anthropology from the University of New Mexico, and PhD in Anthropology from Southern Illinois University (SIUE).

Members should find the book(s) of interest on the YLN website and record the location number, such as “970.2 MCA.” Email the center with that information and you will be advised when the book is available for pick-up at the reception desk. Non-Members can reserve a time to visit the Library and read specific items. Access to the Library is by chance or appointment.
