Oil Painting for Beginners Course

Back by popular demand, Oil Painting for Beginners! Over the course of three-weeks participants in this class will experience the unique medium of oil painting, with an emphasis on the balance between material, light and subject. Participants will learn about different types of oil paints, brushes, and surfaces. As well as how to mix colors and create various effects. NO prior oil painting or art experience is necessary.
During this three-week intensive class, students will leave the class with a painting suitable for framing. The subject matter for this class will be VVAC’s current exhibit, Tim's Cave Reimagined: Stewarding a Cultural Collection.
In addition, students in this course and students that have taken Sylvia Strobel’s classes over the last year at VVAC will be able to partake in a one-day student exhibit featuring a complimentary reception at VVAC on Saturday, November the 14th. The exhibit will feature students’ artworks on easels throughout the museum’s galleries.
The instructor for the class is Sylvia Strobel. Sylvia is a 30-year veteran Biology, Chemistry and art teacher retiring from The Orme School in May of 2025 when the historic ranch school closed. Sylvia draws much of her inspiration for her paintings from the rich ancient Puebloan history of the four corners area. She is a regular visitor to Zuni Pueblo, Mesa Verde, Farmington, New Mexico, and Cortez, Colorado, all areas rich in Puebloan history. Sylvia is a founding member of The Artist Guild of Camp Verde and she teaches oil painting and pastel at her studio in Camp Verde. Her work has been displayed at the Turquoise Raven Art Gallery in Cortez, Colorado, Yavapai College juried exhibits, and the Verde Valley Archaeology Center and Museum in Camp Verde. Beginning in August 2026 her work will be hanging in Salt Mine Winery in Camp Verde and in December 2026 her work will be displayed with the Artist Guild of Camp Verde at the Camp Verde Public Library. Sylvia has lived in the Verde Valley for 25 years. She shares her studio and home with her husband, greyhound, and horses.
