Native American Heritage Garden Workshop and Open House

  • Heritage Garden 330 North Homestead Parkway Camp Verde, AZ, 86322 United States (map)

Join us Memorial Day Weekend at VVAC's Native American Heritage Garden on Saturday, May the 24th: 10:00am - 12:30pm! Enjoy a compost workshop, open house, complimentary snacks, and cold beverages.

For 10,000 years, human beings have called the Verde Valley home due primarily to the Verde’s mild winters and three perennial rivers and creeks. Unfortunately, the soil in the Verde can make backyard gardening a challenge. From the alluvial alkaline-rich substrate of Camp Verde to the sandstone-based, iron-rich red clay of Sedona, horticulturists and gardeners must amend the soil on their property to establish their backyard gardens.

If you have unlimited resources, garden nurseries are happy to deliver a pallet of black topsoil, steer manure, or redwood mulch to your place. In this workshop, Rob Estrada, VVAC's Ethnobotanist will demonstrate a variety of sources that may be acquired here in the Verde Valley for little to no money.

Rob will exhibit a simple way of making a compost bin to fill year-round with dinner scraps, and any other green organic materials from your home. The compost encourages the growth of microorganisms and nitrogen for the vegetative cycle of all plants. Rob will also demonstrate alternative methods as well such as the use of ash, mulch, and manure.

Many thanks to Rob Estrada and to all the garden volunteers for their tremendous efforts in maintaining this property and serving as Earth stewards!
