Join VVAC trip leaders, Richard McGaugh and Monica Buckle, for an immersive VIP planetary and stargazing experience at Lowell Observatory located in Flagstaff. Lowell Observatory is notable for its role in the discovery of Pluto and as the location where A.E. Douglas first brought attention to the emerging field of Southwestern Dendrochronology. Lowell Observatory has been recognized as TIME’s 100 Greatest Places.
Meet at 4:45pm in the lobby of the Astronomy Discover Center, our tour starts promptly at 5:00pm. On the tour hear about the history of Percival Lowell and Lowell Observatory. At 5:30pm a talk, Celestial Visions will be given to learn about multicultural Astronomy that includes short films from Indigenous perspectives, as well as modern astronomical research and technology.
At 6:00pm, a speaker will take us on a journey through our solar system, discussing each of the planets. As dusk moves to darkness enjoy a break with various desserts provided by VVAC.
At 7:30pm the Open Deck Observatory will open for us to view the night’s sky through advanced telescopes. To conclude the evening, we will take a short walk to the historic Clark Telescope with the possibility of looking through this historic telescope.
Plan for four hours (or more!) of discovery and stargazing. Transportation is not provided. Please have an early dinner prior to the 4:45pm arrival time. As mentioned, complimentary desserts will be provided by VVAC.
