Hopi Autumnal Equinox: Archaeoastronomy on the Mesa

This is a Members Only carpool trip limited to 14 individuals.

Join Micah Loma’omvaya, Hopi Bear Clan, Anthropologist, former Tribal Archaeologist and traditional cultural steward for this unique eight-hour visit, scheduled over two days and one night.

Day 1 Sunday We will meet in front of the Hopi restaurant on Second Mesa Sunday at 11:30 AM. We will leave PROMPTLY for the Blue Canyon at 12:00 noon. Blue Canyon is about 40 miles away, so have your gas tanks full from Winslow or Third Mesa in Kykotsmov gas stations. 4WD/AWD vehicles are recommended, but we can carpool if you don’t have one.

Blue Canyon: We will visit stunning rock formations, rich in hoodoos, convoluted cliff walls, and red and white sandstone shapes seemingly painted by otherworldly beings rather than by Mother Nature. A photographer’s paradise.

Old Oraibi: We will also walk Old Oraibi, one of oldest continuously inhabited villages in North America. Micah will teach about the history of the place, and share stories of the Hopi People. Other possibilities are always in store at Hopi, where magic often happens.

Day 2 Monday  We will meet in front of the Hopi restaurant on Second Mesa Sunday at 9:30 AM. We will leave PROMPTLY for Taawa Park at 10:00 AM. Taawa Parkn is about 22 miles away.

Taawa/Dawa Park: With Micah’s expertise and training, we will see some of the ancient Hopi solar calendar petroglyphs at the Taawa Park site, place of an ancient village and trading center. This beautiful location is a source of 12,000 to 15,000 petroglyphs dating back to the Hopi’s ancestral relatives. We hope to see the sun playing on many of these extraordinary images.

Depending on the time of our return from Taawa Park, we have the option of visiting galleries, artists, or other areas of interest. Magic often happens at Hopi!

We strongly suggest staying in a local motel Sunday night. Here are three recommendations:

Hopi Cultural Center Motel on Second Mesa.
