Ashiwi (Zuni) People
Kenny Bowekaty

Who are the Zuni People? Kenny Bowekaty will provide a sample history, culture and religion of the A:shiwi through the telling of the Migration Story, impacts of the Spanish, how the Zuni community is organized and what role traditional religion plays in daily life.

Kenney Bowekaty was born and raised at the Pueblo of Zuni. He gained field experience under the direction of Dr. John W. Rick at Stanford University right out of high school and returned back to the Pueblo of Zuni to work as an archaeologist. Kenny has been a Tour Guide for the Pueblo of Zuni Visitors Center for past six years. He has been an archaeologist with the Pueblo of Zuni Cultural Resource Enterprise (ZCRE) for 28 years, Desert Archeology from Tempe, Arizona and Echo Plan from Phoenix, Arizona. Within the last six years, Bowekaty has implemented and expanded additional archaeological sites within the Pueblo of Zuni.

Bowekaty is a priest shaman to the Fire God Deity and is part of the Lieutenant Society Division that runs and regulates the system of the A:shiwi Religion.
